It is told that a mighty King once gave his right eye to prevent the satire of a bard, such was the power of the spoken word in Ireland.
Respected and often feared in equal measure, storytellers and poets inhabited and shaped Irish consciousness for generations. To this day storytelling is a dynamic part of Irish life.
Niall de Búrca is a storyteller raised in the West of Ireland; a region steeped in Gaelic tradition. He combines ancient stories with original tales and has featured at festivals; on radio and television worldwide.
Niall has performed at the European Parliament in Bruxelles; toured Hawaii as part of the University of Hawaii Cultural Series and was the featured international performer at the U.S National Storytelling Festival in Tennessee in 2009.
A defining trait of the storytelling in Ireland is spontanteity. And so it is with Niall, he reacts to the environment and his audience and that is what dictates the tales to be told.
“His ability to evoke a wide range of emotions from his rapt audience enables him to bewitch people with his stories and make listening to him, as well as watching him, an unforgettable experience” Vienna Review July 2010.
Join Niall for an evening of stories from the Irish tradition. As the Gaelic proverb say’s: “Níor bhris focal maith fiacal riamh….A good word never broke a tooth”
“Níor bhris focal maith fiacal riamh….A good word never broke a tooth”
